El Barzón
This toy theater piece, named after the folk song, El Barzon, portrays the uprising of the farming lower-class with dark comedy. I translated the folk song, designed and made the puppets, and performed this for an intimate virtual audience of fellow puppeteers.
In the later 1800s, leading up to the Mexican Revolution, farmers and laborers were subjected to exploitative working conditions that were equivalent to indentured servitude. These conditions were upheld by landowners and private entries.
The folk song, El Barzón, composed by Luis Pérez Meza in 1936 became a revolutionary anthem for the farmers and laborers that courageously rebelled.
Is folk-punk more your beat? Check out the Maldita Vecindad cover of El Barzon here. I love this version.
